A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami-Dade Leader.
Although not quite at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the county's top official conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miamiās iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
āThis animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,ā declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration.
āUnless you count eating six or seven apples per day,ā the mayor added. āI hope she experiences a long and happy life away from worry.ā
The gathering, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling ā6-7ā ā originating from a hip-hop line ā often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently declared āsix-sevenā its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a rural sanctuary ādistant from barbecues and spitsā, according to the eventās official press release.
āThe annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,ā said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
āIt captures the essence of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Each year, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.ā
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
