Crew Member Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following Wave of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also carried well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the landing.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was buried under the tide of misogyny.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
Months following achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the experience, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
