Manchester United Set to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Signing for United

The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.

Departure from Bayern was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.

Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Carrington

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.

Their recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has brought further business:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure stated: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
