Massive Disruption Projected: Britain's Worst-Case Climate Crisis Scenarios Revealed by Researchers
The direst potential impacts of the global heating for the UK have been mapped by researchers, including a searing 4C increase in temperatures to a 2-metre increase in sea level. A separate possibility envisions a plunge of 6C in temperatures following the shutdown of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt farming and energy demand.
Credible Extremes, Not Forecasts
These effects, a number of which are linked to climate tipping points, are viewed as low probability but possible. The researchers said that these scenarios plugged a hole in planning that had left the UK unprepared for catastrophic possibilities.
"The climate extremes we have detailed are not forecasts, but they are plausible," stated the lead researcher who oversaw the analysis. "The nation has been planning lacking the methods to plan for catastrophic outcomes. We've now supplied policymakers what they need to plan for climate outcomes they pray never occur, but must not overlook."
A Spectrum of Harsh Climate Possibilities
Another collection of worst-case scenarios maps the projected severity of severe conditions between now and the year 2100. These indicate that thermometer readings could soar in some months by up to 6C above average, while precipitation could be triple typical amounts.
The probability of the worst-case outcomes occurring could not be calculated due to uncertainty about what steps will be enacted to tackle global warming and how the climate system will behave. This analysis was likened to security threat evaluations or stress tests for financial systems.
Major Outcome Highlights
- 4C Temperature Rise: Global temperatures exceeding 4C by 2100 could occur if emissions cuts fails or if strong feedback loops including the tropical forests perishing unleash its enormous store of carbon. This would cause extreme and prolonged heatwaves and water shortages affecting the UK in summer.
- Atlantic Current Collapse: A critical sea current, the North Atlantic current, is losing strength and losing stability due to ocean warming. A collapse starting around 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Crop production would be severely challenged and water resources would be fundamentally reshaped," explained the lead researcher.
- Rapid Sea Level Rise: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could happen if ice sheets in the polar regions disintegrate quickly, inundating coastal cities and towns. In contrast to the other scenarios, this threat is already understood by planners.
- Aerosol Effect: Global averages could also be driven up by about 0.75C if pollution from industry is drastically reduced. This counterintuitive effect occurs because aerosol particles from burning coal scatter sunlight from warming the ground.

The study created the extreme models using a mix of real-world events, computer simulations and established principles. The possibilities do not take into account potential global problems such as the devastation of food supplies and resource wars.
This work was initiated as part of a official risk assessment framework. Previous assessments have stated that not enough attention was being paid to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.
Official experts has stated that the UK needs to "adapt to 2C" and examine the risks for 4C. Earlier government strategies have been described as being "very weak" by some observers.
