Forecasters are saying a chilly beginning to the new year, with snowfall anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Continue Despite Alerts

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay celebrations are planned to go ahead, following last year's calling-off. This comes despite weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be needed," said the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks displays, with dry conditions and good visibility. The mercury are expected to be low, making extra layers essential, said forecasters.

Further north, skies will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for Friday

Heading into Friday, advisories are active across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are expected on the transport network.

The Mercury Set to Plummet Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Health Alerts Released

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials explained this indicated the weather was expected to cause significant impacts across health and social care services. This includes a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.

The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in safely, wrapping up warm is completely paramount.
