Over one million users each week display suicidal thoughts when conversing with ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence firm reports.
According to a latest blogpost from OpenAI, over one million ChatGPT individuals weekly input messages that feature "clear signs of likely suicide planning or tendencies".
This discovery is a component of an report on how the chatbot addresses sensitive conversations and constitutes one of the clearest statements from the artificial intelligence giant regarding the extent of how machine learning can exacerbate psychological problems.
Emotional Crises and Severe Conditions
Along with its estimates on suicidal thoughts and associated conversations, the company also mentioned that around 0.07% of engaged individuals – roughly 560,000 out of its claimed 800 million active users – exhibit "likely signals of emotional emergencies connected to severe mental conditions".
The announcement noted that these discussions were difficult to identify or quantify, and that this was an initial analysis.
Growing Attention and Lawsuits
When the company releases information on emotional problems connected to its flagship offering, the company is facing growing examination following a prominent legal action from the relatives of a young man who committed suicide after significant use with ChatGPT.
The Federal Trade Commission in the previous month furthermore began a comprehensive inquiry into organizations that build artificial intelligence assistants, like the company, to determine how they evaluate harmful effects on young people.
Latest Version and Enhanced Protection
The AI firm claimed in its announcement that its latest GPT-5 update reduced the number of concerning actions from its product and improved customer protection in a system assessment featuring in excess of 1,000 suicide and self-harm discussions.
"The latest system assessments grade the latest AI system at 91% adhering to our desired behaviors, versus 77% for the earlier version," the company's post states.
The company indicated that GPT-5 enhanced availability of support lines and included notifications for users to pause during extended conversations.

To upgrade capabilities to the system, the firm stated it enlisted 170 medical professionals from its worldwide health community of health care experts to help its research over the past few months, which involved assessing the protection of its AI's replies and assisting in crafting the AI's responses to mental-health related questions.
"Within this project, psychiatrists and psychologists examined more than 1,800 AI answers including critical psychological cases and evaluated replies from the updated chatbot to earlier versions," the AI firm mentioned.
AI Limitations
AI researchers and psychological experts have long been wary of AI's tendency to affirm users' decisions or delusions without considering whether they may be detrimental, an concern known as over-compliance.
Psychological professionals have also been concerned about people using AI chatbots for psychological support and warned how it could harm susceptible people.

The terminology in OpenAI's post distances the firm from any potential causal links between its product and the emotional situations that its individuals are undergoing.
"Mental health symptoms and emotional distress are widespread in human societies, and an increasing user base indicates that some portion of AI interactions include these situations," OpenAI's post mentioned.
Planned Adjustments
OpenAI's CEO recently claimed in a post on X that the firm had achieved progress in treating mental health issues, announcing that OpenAI would relax limitations and shortly start to allow adults to produce adult material.
"We made the conversational system quite limited to ensure we were exercising caution with psychological concerns. We acknowledge this rendered it less valuable/pleasurable to numerous individuals who had no mental health problems, but given the importance of the matter we sought to get this right," the CEO stated. "Since we have been effectively reduced the critical psychological concerns and have enhanced capabilities, we are prepared to securely ease the restrictions in the majority of situations."
