The English and Wales Drawn in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a highly-anticipated early encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing mirrors their famous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Key Group Draws

The Irish and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a pool together, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they secured a 36-14 win, with their opponents unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Portugal, both impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked the Springboks before the final, presuming the Springboks top their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the groups conclude in line with the current world rankings, further top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of England and Ireland until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at jump-start the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have drawn Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in 2023.

This edition will feature a round of 16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the other six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
