The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several agonizing personal histories for characters such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release released by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will love its presence.
Personally, The series' intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro appears as among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
